Islamabad: The principal accused in a rupees nine billion (Dh750 million) bank loan scandal — who extradited to Pakistan from the US — was produced before an anti-corruption accountability court in Lahore on Saturday.
Hamesh Khan, holder of Pakistan and US nationalities, was arrested in the US in December on an Interpol request. He was brought back to Pakistan on Friday in custody of officials of the National Accountability Bureau (Nab).
The court remanded him to fourteen-days in custody. Investigation is on based on charges which allege that as chief executive of the Bank of Punjab Khan loaned nine billion rupees to owners of a steel mill without proper collateral guarantee, in return for heavy kick-backs.
After investigation, Khan will be produced before the accountability court again.
The top court has directed Nab to produce Khan on May 26. Nab officials said rupees six billion have been recovered with the money being transferred to the Bank of Punjab.
