KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief has called upon the business community to muster courage and disclose the identities of those who are patronising the kidnappers, criminals and gangsters behind the worsening law and order situation in this city.

Altaf Husain, the MQM chief, in a statement on Monday also urged the country’s establishment to screen out those black sheep among their ranks harbouring criminals involved in heinous crimes like kidnapping for ransom and extortion.

Kidnapping and extortion has become a menace in this city and many groups and gangs in different parts of the city are engaged in these crimes, especially targeting the business community.

The Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), the apex trade body of the country, along with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) were planning to wage a string of protests after Eid to compel the civil administration to crack down on criminals.

However, Ishratul Ibad, the governor of Sindh, persuaded the two trade bodies to defer their protest plans and held out an assurance that the government would come down heavily on the criminals.

Hussain said that it was the responsibility of the establishment to find out the elements in its ranks that were supporting and protecting the criminals involved in kidnapping for ransom and extortion in Karachi.

The establishment is the term which usually refers to the military and paramilitary forces or their affiliate agencies.

The MQM chief also lauded the collection of hides of sacrificial animals during Eid Al Adha by the Khidmate Khalq Foundation (KK), the charity and welfare organ of the party.
