Hyderabad: Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh, fighting for statehood for more than half a century, was largely disappointed with the report of the Justice Srikrishna committee released by the central government on Thursday.

All the parties and organizations fighting for a separate state of Telangana held a massive day long sit-in protest in Hyderabad demanding that the union government should bring a bill in Parliament immediately to carve out the state.

They were frustrated and disappointed with the committee for giving six different options to the government to solve a problem saying they were not ready to accept anything less than a Telangana state.

Telangana Rashtra Samiti president K Chandrasekhar Rao, who spearheaded the movement for the last decade , saw a positive aspect in the report.

“The committee has also suggested that restoring the pre-1956 status and formation of Telangana state with Hyderabad as its capital. That is exactly what we have been asking for and that is what the committee has also said,” he told the massive gathering at Indira Park in Hyderabad.

Rao said that as far as the other options suggested by the committee were concerned, they were rejected by the committee itself in the report as unworkable.

“All other options relate to continuation of the present status of Andhra Pradesh and that is not at all acceptable to the Telangana people,” he said.

“I am appealing to the Prime Minister not to dilly dally the matter and take immediate steps to solve the problem by bringing a bill in the Parliament. He should stand by the announcement made on December 9 last year,” he said.

He warned that if the decision was delayed, Telangana would explode and there would be serious consequences.

He also urged the elected representatives of Telangana region, especially from the ruling Congress party, to be ready to resign and create a constitutional crisis to force the hands of the central government.

“If something goes wrong, Congress leaders will be responsible,” he said.

KCR said that all the Telangana organizations under the banner of Telangana Joint Action committee will build a massive movement and bring the entire region to a grinding halt. “Be ready for the call of the TJAC,” he said.

The protest was addressed by the leaders of the Telangana Joint Action Committee, representatives of Muslim minority, lawyers, students, women and other sections of the society. Senior BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya reiterated that if the government brings a bill in the Parliament, his party and its NDA coalition will support it.

Telangana Praja Front leader and popular folk singer Ghaddar said that the people of the region were not ready to be mislead and cheated once again.

“This time our only slogan should be bring Telangana bill in Parliament”, he said.

Folk singer and other artistes exhorted the people of Telangan to protest through their songs throughout the day.
