Bangalore: Security guards and two suspects exchanged fire at a space centre in southern India on Tuesday, an official said.

The shootout occured after the security guards confronted the suspects, who were acting suspiciously around the Deep Space Network.

One of the suspects began firing a handgun at the security guards, said Indian Space Research Organisation ( Isro) director S. Satish.

Extra security guards have been posted at the facility after the incident, Satish said.

India has been on high alert since a bombing in the city of Pune in February that killed 16 people.

The Deep Space Network was set up in 2007 by the state-run Isro for receiving data and images from the country's first unmanned lunar exploration mission, Chandrayaan-1, which was launched in 2008.
