New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has made his debut on the microblogging site Twitter in a bid by his team to bridge the communication gap with the computer savvy younger generation.
The decision to bring the prime minister on twitter was taken in the wake of TV journalist Pankaj Pachauri joining the prime minister's office as his media advisor.
"The Prime Minister's work should be in the public domain so that people know that the government is functioning for their benefit," PMO sources said.
The account PMOIndia, according to the prime minister's office, will keep giving regular information about his activities and achievements.
"The Prime Minister's office is now on Twitter @PMOIndia Thank you for your support," Pachauri said on his own Twitter account.
Interestingly, Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj, has been quite active on twitter, giving regular updates. Singh joins several top leaders of the world who are on the twitter.
However, it is clear that the Indian Prime Minister himself would not be twitting messages, the job will be done by his media team, led by Pachauri.
So far three messages have been posted on the twitter, all related to the bravery award ceremony that was held at Singh's Race Course Road bungalow on Tuesday.
A total of 9,821 persons had joined him as his follower by Tuesday afternoon and the decision has been widely welcomed on twitter itself.
