Kabul: A service member of the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) died following an insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, the coalition said in a statement. It gave no other details.

Afghan authorities say insurgents fired two rockets that landed as close as one kilometre from the site where more than 2,000 Afghan elders are attending a national assembly in Kabul.

The Afghan Ministry of Interior said the two rockets were fired from an unknown location at about 8am Thursday.

Kabul police criminal director Mohammad Zahir says one rocket landed near a police station, injuring one person.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai spoke Wednesday on the opening day of the assembly - called a loya jirga - where the elders are considering the terms of the future US presence in their country.
