Abu Dhabi: Heavy-duty vehicles and trucks will not be permitted on Abu Dhabi’s internal and external roads during peak hours from January 1, Abu Dhabi Police announced on Wednesday.

The violators will be fined Dh1,000 and four black points. The move is to make roads safer and minimise road accidents involving trucks and heavy vehicles, which lead to deaths and serious injuries, the police said.

Lorry and truck drivers can take to the roads during morning and evening hours except between 6.30am and 9am, and in the evening between 3pm and 6pm.

Lieutenant Mohammad Salem Al Shihhi, director of the traffic engineering and road safety department of police, said, “In coordination with the Department of Transport we will prepare new sign boards and install it in the internal and external parts of Abu Dhabi.”

He urged truck drivers to obey traffic rules and avoid commuting during the prohibited timings as the traffic police will be closely watching.
