Abu Dhabi: The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City has installed a countdown pedestrian signaling system on Corniche Street, starting from the Hilton intersection to Al Mina intersection.

It is part of the Municipality's efforts to introduce the latest traffic systems at world-class standards,  ensuring security and safety of all road users, said a statement issued by the Municipality.

The Municipality had already conducted  trial runs of the countdown signal system before its installation on the main streets.

The trial-run successfully streamlined traffic and pedestrian movement at the intersections and reduced the rate of traffic accidents.

According to the Municipality, the new pedestrian light signaling system is based on a countdown digital timer clearly displaying the time pedestrians have to wait before crossing the road along with the timescale allotted for crossing.

In a related development, the  Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) coverage monitoring the traffic movement has been expanded to cover all streets and  intersections of Abu Dhabi Island.

About  70 additional CCTV cameras have been installed, bringing the total number to 162 CCTV cameras.

They have been linked with the Main Light Signal Control Center through a modern fiber optic network to transmit live high definition images showing all details of traffic movements at various intersections.
