Abu Dhabi: Sixteen new electric Tesla charging stations have opened on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island’s Yas Mall and Yas Island Theme Parks, boosting the accessibility for owners who drive electric cars.

The new charging stations were opened on Sunday by the island’s management, bringing the total number of electric vehicle charging stations on Yas Island to 22. Of the new 16 charging stations, 10 are at Yas Mall, and three each at two theme parks. The island also have charging stations belonging to Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

“At Yas Island, we want to ensure that all of our visitors, joining us from near and far, feel a genuine sense of encouragement to come and enjoy the wide range of activities, events, and attractions on offer. By consistently expanding our ease of accessibility and transportation options, we aim to create a smooth, memorable and facilitated experience, 365 days of the year,” said Gerardo Llanes, executive director, Yas Island Destination Management.

Llanes added that Yas Island was now home for the most number of charging stations in Abu Dhabi.

“This reinforces Yas Island’s status as a world-class destination that is aligned with its visitors’ needs and demands, as well as the UAE’s long-term Vision 2021 for sustainable environment and infrastructure,” he added.

The installation of the Tesla charging stations are timely, with the all electric car maker opening its first official branch in Dubai last week, making it easier for customers in the UAE to purchase Tesla vehicles, whereas previously owners would have to import them from abroad.

Tesla also introduced its new Model 3 electric car this month, with its price starting at $35,000 (Dh128,537). The first Model 3 cars are expected to be delivered at the end of the July, with the company planning to produce 20,000 cars a month by December.

Other Tesla models currently available for UAE customers are Model S — priced at Dh281,350, and the Model X at Dh332,500.
