Young Emiratis welcomed the greater representation of youth and women in the new ministerial cabinet announced by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Wednesday.

“Appointment of a young woman as youth minister is a sign of UAE’s diligence in addressing youth issues and harnessing their energy,” said Yousuf Al Shehhi, 22, an Emirati dentist.

“The UAE already pays close attention to Emirati youth needs.”

He described this move as ‘excellent.’ He also expected that this new youth minister would provide new insight to issues that Emirati youth face such as education, employment, and marriage, Al Shehhi said.

Al Shehhi echoed Shaikh Mohammad’s belief that the UAE is at the beginning of a new era focused on development of knowledge, supporting science and research and the use of exceptional young talent.

Al Shehhi said the UAE government not only provides services, but also builds the skills of its citizens and provides an environment that encourages achievements.

Mohammad Bashkeel, a 28-year-old entrepreneur from Abu Dhabi, said it was a bold move in the right direction. “It shows how our leaders focus on the youth population in the UAE. A portfolio for happiness is also very important, especially in such a turbulent time in the region. It is important that people have something positive to look forward to,” Bashkeel said.

Shaikha Al Suwaidi, a 20-year-old International Affairs student at Zayed University, believes it’s great that Shaikh Mohammad is providing opportunities for fresh graduates. “The Minister (of State for Youth) is 22, she will understand us more than someone who is older,” she said.

Al Suwaidi added that creating a ministerial post for this young age is an exciting move. “It will motivate boys and girls to pursue education so that one day, they can contribute to the happiness of their people.

“It has motivated me …. When I heard the news [about the Minister of State for Youth], I told myself that I [too] can be something,”
