Dubai: A youth seminar organised by the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) on Twitter to promote Arabic language has garnered more than 229 million views worldwide, it was announced.

The first-of-its-kind event was organised on Twitter under the title “How to Make Arabic the Language of Science and Knowledge?” witnessed the participation of prominent and influential UAE figures including representatives of government, private and media institutions.

It also saw a number of fresh initiatives launched seeking to support Arabic language, adapt it to science and technology and encourage young people to develop and use it.

“This is the first time that a youth seminar has been held on social media,” said Shamma Suhail Faris Al Mazroui, Minister of State for Youth, who took part in the discussion.

“We are delighted with the massive interaction from the local community and the wider Arab audiences, who poured in to respond to questions raised during the episode.”

Al Mazroui said this demonstrates the essential role of social media when it comes to interacting with the youth.

“The topic of the episode comes at a critical juncture — at a time when the need to adhere to our Arabic language is critical if we truly wish to develop it to suit modern inventions and studies,” she said.

During the session, the MBRF announced that it will be launching the Arab Youth Knowledge Council, which seeks to support knowledge production and dissemination in the Arab world, while the Ministry of Education announced the social media-centred ‘Tweeting in Arabic’ initiative to encourage students to use Arabic language across social media channels.

Jamal Bin Huwaireb, MBRF’s CEO, said the foundation was grateful for the remarkable participation that the Youth Circle witnessed. “This is a great opportunity for us to promote our beloved Arabic language and to better support intellectual and cultural activities, as well as scientific and academic content.”
