Dubai: One day after the UK diplomatic set in Abu Dhabi celebrated Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday, the Dubai Consulate hosted its own birthday party on Wednesday to celebrate the monarch’s longest reign in British history.

British Consul General in Dubai Paul Fox told the gathering that during “Her Majesty’s reign the UK has undergone massive change. However she has proved to be the most potent symbol of continuity the UK has known, providing a counterpoint to this far-reaching change. In doing so she has shown a dutifulness and commitment to her country and people, providing a balm of institutional continuity.”

The gala event draped in union flags and held annually, brings out national pride among those attending who make up an UK expat population in the UAE of more than 100,000.

Ross MacDonald, UK expatriate and Dubai resident, said he believes the Queen remains a strong symbol of the long history of the country and is a good example to follow.

“I think she defines the Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. We are a country of history and heritage, our ruling monarch is part of who we are. She is relevant because of our historical position. We look to our future based on our past,” said MacDonald.

Jonathan Howell-Jones, UK expat, said he believes the Queen is remarkably relevant and posted greetings for her 90th birthday on Facebook.

“The British monarchy has become one of the primary ways of communicating Britain’s character and capability around the world,” he said, noting that the televised wedding of Prince Andrew and Kate was viewed by one-third of the world’s population.

“We’re very proud of her, she is an extension of our character,” Howell-Jones said.

Jack Russell, UK expatriate, questioned the Queen’s relevance amid rapid modern changes in society.

“The world has changed since Elizabeth took to the throne. It’s hard to see how an historic institution with all of the trappings of Empire has a place in the 21st Century. Whoever voted for the Queen?”
