Sharjah: His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has issued orders to create a specialised centre for diabetes, endocrinology, cancer and nanomedicine in Sharjah.

According to the directives of Dr Shaikh Sultan, who is also president of the University of Sharjah, the new medical research and treatment facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and staffed with specialists.

The prevalence of diabetes has crossed 19 per cent of UAE’s total population, according to estimates, with impaired diabetes reaching 15.3 per cent. The UAE National Diabetes and Lifestyle Survey observed that 10.6 per cent of Asians and 11.7 per cent of Arabs were found to be diabetic as compared to 3.6 per cent among Africans and westerners.

Dr Shaikh Sultan also approved the establishment of a mobile clinic to serve children, people with special needs and the elderly.

Later, in a meeting with the new faculty members of the University of Sharjah, Dr Shaikh Sultan stressed that the varsity is a recognised and advanced academic institution that continues to contribute to the domain of scientific research.
