Sharjah: The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority has added seven new intercity buses to its fleet at a cost of Dh3.5 million, it was announced.

The new buses, each with a capacity of 65 passengers, bring the total fleet to 135 that will be able to transport 17,500 passengers daily.

“The buses which will depart from Al Jubail bus station will operate on medium-length intercity routes, mainly between Sharjah and Ajman,” said Abdul Aziz Al Jarwan, Director of Sharjah RTA’s Transport Affairs.

The new buses match the best standards of comfort and entertainment and safety specifications, said Al Jarwan, and have been equipped with screens outside and inside displaying the route of the trip.

The buses have been modified so that they can operate efficiently during long trips, he added. “They are also equipped with a modern alarm system, comfortable seating and air-conditioning units that are of high quality. The buses are also disabled-friendly.”

All seven buses were manufactured by Chinese manufacturer King Long who, Al Jarwan said, has a great deal of experience in manufacturing buses of different specifications.

Al Jarwan also confirmed that Sharjah RTA is working on 16 new intercity routes from Al Jubail bus station. Two new routes were launched this year — one linking Sharjah to Al Ain and the other linking Sharjah to Dubai International Airport, Terminal 2, he said.

The bus fare ranges from Dh5 to Dh20 on short routes and Dh20 to Dh30 on longer routes.

Besides Al Jubail, Sharjah has bus stations at the airport and Al Rolla, he said. More than 5.7 million passengers were transported by intercity buses in 2015.
