Dubai The Reading Nation Ramadan campaign auction is gathering a valuable collection of objects that will be sold off to the highest bidders to raise funds for the ongoing Reading Nation Ramadan campaign.

The charity auction is set to run on Tuesday at the Madinat Jumeirah.

Mohammad Al Murr, former speaker of the Federal National Council, has donated an ancient manuscript and a manuscript edition of the Quran dating back to the 19th century. In addition, an old copy of the Quran dating back three-centuries was donated by Abdul Rahman Bin Mohammad Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention.

The Quran donated by Al Owais is written in the Khatt an-Nasakh, one of Arabic calligraphy’s most beautiful writing styles. The first two pages of this Quran are embroidered with gold and azure threads, while its verses are separated using small gold-coloured delineations.

The manuscript donated by Al Murr is one chapter of the Quran - Surat Al Qadr (The Power). This ancient document is an Arabic calligraphy manuscript that is embroidered with golden threads. Meanwhile, the copy of the Quran donated by Al Murr is an embellished Indian-Mogul manuscript dating back to 1227 Hijri.

The auction complements the efforts of the Reading Nation Ramadan campaign that is aiming to provide five million books to children in refugee camps and underprivileged students in schools across the world, through granting two million books to refugee children and a further two million books to establish more than 2,000 school libraries around the world. In addition, the campaign is also mandated to support the educational programs implemented by the UAE’s humanitarian organisations worldwide - with one million books.

Meanwhile, donations from Emiratis across diverse walks of life continue to pour in for the campaign announced on the first day of Ramadan this year.

Saeed Mohammed Al Ghandi, a prominent Emirati businessman, has announced a contribution of Dh1 million to provide 100,000 books.

Al Ghandi said: “We continue to learn invaluable lessons from the humanitarian initiatives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad [Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai]. These initiatives reinforce the spirit of giving in the Emirati society, and empower the values on which our beloved UAE was built.”

Dubai Cares CEO Tareq Al Gurg thanked Al Ghandi for his participation and said: “Such donations complement the bright and positive image of the Emirati society. The campaign has witnessed the participation of people from all walks of life, and this is what motivates us to work harder to achieve the vision of our wise leadership.”
