Dubai: Nine new drivers were awarded in Sharjah on Wednesday, with Porsche RoadStar continuing its campaign in Sharjah looking for safe drivers.

Today (Thursday) is the last day of the campaign in Sharjah and the last day of the 33rd Porsche RoadStar campaign.

Mariam Rashid Saeed, Ziyad Khair Allah, Aysha Al Hammadi, Najma Abdullah, Mounira Mohammad, all from the UAE; Nouf Riyad, from Egypt; Shahd Al Sarraj, from Syria; Abdul Latif Qasim Ali, from Pakistan; and Marcin Kallout, from Poland, were the nine safe drivers chosen for the day.

Abdul Latif Qasim Ali, a driver from Pakistan, said that he will give part of his award to charity, but the majority will go towards his daughter’s wedding.

He was elated when he was chosen, as the prize money is almost more than half his monthly salary.

Roshanara Sait, Ciel Events Director and founder of the campaign, said that they noticed that the majority of Wednesday’s winners were Emirati women.

She said that another interesting winner was Ziyad Khair Allah, 48, who is a member of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce, who was driving a sports car.

Khair Allah said he was stopped on his way to office. “They asked for my licence and registration and then told me I had won and explained the initiative to me. I think it’s a good initiative but could be even better if they make it on a larger scale, where a number of teams go around and award people.”

He said that driving a sports car does not exclude him from following the rules and being a safe driver. “Road safety is very important and it’s not just for the driver but for all the road users around him,” he said.

This year, the campaign is sponsored by Porsche Centre Dubai and Al Nabooda Automobiles, with RSA Insurance and EMA Lubricants as co-sponsors.

Drivers who adhere to the basic principles of good driving such as wearing seat belts, using child safety seats, using indicators and hands-free mobiles, observe lane discipline and display courtesy, in addition to staying within the legal speed limits, are considered for the RoadStar award.
