Dubai: A traffic accident that resulted in multiple fractures in his left arm and hand in addition to other physical injuries and temporary loss of sight, hearing and the sense of smell did not dampen his will to continue doing his job at Dubai Police.

First Corporal Ahmad Mohammad Muthana Al Shuaibi, 61, who works at the traffic investigation department at Bur Dubai police station, was chosen as one of the unsung heroes and honoured by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, at the Dubai Government Excellence Awards on Tuesday.

Al Shuaibi, from Yemen, started working at Dubai Police in March 1984 in the Criminal Investigation Department in the Bur Dubai police station, and then he was moved to Jebel Ali police station in 1998.

“One day in 2005 my colleague and I were on our way to an accident. My colleague was driving and we got into a traffic accident. I received multiple fractures to my left arms and hand, and thought I had lost my sight, hearing and the sense of smell. But after 10 days my sight and sense of smell came back, but I was told I would have to wear a hearing aid,” he said.

He said that he was told that he should start getting used to the aid and wear it for some time every day, “I tried it once for 30 minutes and then removed it and my hearing was back. I did not need it. After that I felt my abdomen was growing even though I wasn’t eating a lot and exercising. I went to the doctors and they told me I had four hernias caused by the seat belt during the accident and I had them removed,” he said.

Al Shuaibi said that he is very appreciative of all the support Dubai Police gave him throughout his ordeal. “They took care of all my medical expenses. I was not as capable after the accident; however they allowed me to continuing working at Dubai Police.”

He was moved back to Bur Dubai, as a traffic accident investigator, which suited his condition.

“I cannot just thank one person I want to thank everyone, from the Police Chief all the way down. I also want to thank them for nominating me for this award. It came as a surprise, and I was really happy for this recognition. Dubai is known for its generous shaikhs and how they care for their people,” Al Shuaibi said.

Al Shuaibi had received multiple certificates of thanks and recognition from entities he had worked with as an investigator.

“I kept working and did great things with our team and helped many entities,” he said.
