Dubai: The power of communication in creating a tolerant society and strengthening national dialogue is only possible when the government and media work together.

This concept was highlighted by Alex Aiken, Executive Director of Government Communication for the UK Government during the first day of the Arab Media Forum (AMF) in a session titled ‘Dialogue of Tolerance.’

“My purpose in giving this speech is to argue for government and media to lead, reinforce and defend a culture of tolerance by setting high standards that will strengthen the national dialogue and unity in the face of economic, society, and technological challenges,” said Aiken.

He referred to his meetings and encounters with the UAE’s Minister of Tolerance and Minister of Youth, pointing out their interaction with the public and youth in particular. “The UAE’s doctrine of tolerance is a strong example of how to build a strong tolerant society,” he said.

He further said that communication is a hugely effective force for government to create a more tolerant and inclusive society. “Together we can use the power of commination to inspire people to do the best for their countries,” said Aiken, referring to the influence and power of social media.

Describing each person in the community as a “potential editor or commentator,” on social media, he highlighted the speed of transmission of news as well as economic changes as challenges governments and the media need to tackle together.

He listed honesty, accuracy, impartiality, fairness and accountability as some of the ethics journalists must follow to achieve great journalism. He also pointed out that effective government communication based on such values and high standards can set an example for social media users to join the debate effectively through an “honest, robust and tolerant dialogue.”
