Dubai: If you are worried about your health this Ramadan season, the federal Ministry of Health and Prevention can help.

Running up to June 8, the ministry has started free health check-ups in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain.

The ministry has also been handing out booklets on better eating. The booklets also list foods with high nutritional value such as whole wheat bread and breakfast cereals.

Materials advise individuals to replace oily fried foods with baked or grilled foods, cut down on salt and to avoid dehydration.

The campaign has so far run across markets in Mezher and Al Warqa’a, and shopping centres in Dubai. Sharjah Cooperative Societies and Ajman Markets Association in Al Jaraf and Rumaila have also hosted the ministry’s initiative, as well as government departments in Umm Al Quwain.

Fasting during Ramadan provides an opportunity to adopt healthy behaviour, said Fadila Mohammad Sharif, a health ministry official. The fasting month is an ideal time to quit smoking, eat a balanced healthy diet, and exercise, she added.

She urged individuals to stop drinking sweetened beverages and eating too much. Instead, she said, eat healthy fruits such as dates, and drink low-fat milk and water to avoid indigestion and weight problems.
