Dubai: Dubai Police intervened to resolve the issues faced by workers of a road construction company in Al Quoz Industrial Area on Monday.

A group of workers gathered in front of their accommodation by the roadside, causing delays in traffic movement in the area for some time. Workers complained that they had not been paid for six months and were finding it difficult to survive.

Officers from the Human Rights Department of the Dubai Police rushed to the site and asked them to give way to the traffic. They then held discussions with the workers and assured them of action.

One of the officers at the site estimated the number of workers affected to be 300 and said they were provoked when somebody turned off the generator, which was later made operational again.

Brigadier Dr. Mohammad Al Murr, head of Human Rights Department, told Gulf News the department is following up the workers’ demands with the cooperation of the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.

“The problem started before two weeks due to late salary. Their company failed to pay their salaries for a couple of months and we are coordinating with the labour ministry and the company to solve the problem.” He said that a businessman was expected to buy the company and would solve the problem.

“There is a new buyer for the company and we will make sure that the money [he pays] will first cover the workers’ pending salaries. Dubai police is keen to protect the workers’ rights in Dubai and solve their problems,” he added.
