Dubai: Dubai Municipality on Monday celebrated International Workers’ Day by honouring the best performing workers.

The special ceremony to mark the occasion, organised by the Human Resources Department, was held in the City Hall of the municipality in the presence of Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director-General of Dubai Municipality and other officials.

Lootah said the municipality joined the rest of the world in celebrating the International Workers’s Day because it believed that its workers are its true wealth.

“Without their dedicated efforts to serve the city and their keenness to carry out their tasks, the municipality could not have achieved this level of beauty and prosperity in Dubai,” he said in a press release.

He said that the municipality had pledged to ensure the happiness of its workers and offered them a number of initiatives.

“Just two weeks ago, we sent 100 workers for Umrah, in addition to honouring the best employees and offering leisure trips for many workers,” said Lootah.

Several workers were taken to cinemas for watching movies as part of the leisure trip.

“In addition, the municipality has provided Wi-Fi internet access in the workers’ housing complex and has worked to ensure the success of the Iftar project throughout the holy month of Ramadan and also distributed many gifts to them throughout the year,” he said.

The construction of new residential complexes for the workers with all amenities including entertainment had been approved at a cost of about Dh200 million, of which about 50 per cent had been completed, added Lootah.

Marwan Bayat Al Falasi, director of Human Resources Department thanked the Zabeel office of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, for providing 4,250 daily breakfasts to the workers with a generous donation from Shaikha Hind Bint Maktoum Bin Jumaa Al Maktoum, wife of the Ruler of Dubai.

During the ceremony, Lootah also honoured the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority for offering awareness lectures to the municipality’s employees on energy and water conservation, as well as for giving prizes to workers.

He also honoured the Red Crescent for offering rewards to the workers throughout the year, the Dubai Civil Defence for supporting the municipality by providing lectures and workshops on firefighting, and the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department and Dar Al Ber Society for offering religious lectures in different languages at the mosques in the workers’ housing complexes.

Hotel Radisson Blue was honoured for providing 5,000 gifts to workers throughout the year, while Spinneys was honoured for supporting their iftar programme throughout the month of Ramadan.
