Abu Dhabi: Not knowing UAE cyber laws will not spare a person from legal action if they are found spreading misinformation on social media sites, the Abu Dhabi Police has warned.

The internet, especially social networking sites, is often the carrier of incorrect messages, so people should cross check the facts before retweeting or passing it on to friends or relatives online, Major General Salem Shaheen Al Nuaimi, Director of Leadership Affairs at the Abu Dhabi Police, said.

People should get the information from reliable sources and competent authorities before posting it online, he said.

Maj Gen Al Nuaimi said authorities enforce the law to prevent any online activities that can lead to damage of reputations.

Abu Dhabi Police and its social networking sites also carry out a number of educational awareness activities that alert the community members about such dangers.

Users of social networking sites should not publish anything that is bound to offend, or circulate rumours or launch them through different technical means, he warned.

He added, “This has legal consequences for the individual. Even if the person claims that he was not aware of its provisions, there is no excuse for ignorance of law.”

“We are in a world where information flows widely and rapidly, and we must take care to deal with it in a positive manner in accordance with the legislation, not circulate negative information and refrain from publishing any unconfirmed information.”

The police called on the public to use social media sites for positive interactions, enhancing social relations and promoting values of the society.

It cautioned public against publishing images of traffic violations or other images of negative behaviours that do not conform with the traditions and values of the local society.
