Abu Dhabi: The UAE Central Bank said that it is the responsibility of banks to upgrade their ATMs in order to accept the new denomination Dh500 note, a spokesperson told Gulf News.

"It is the task of every bank to upgrade its machines. They have to upgrade their software in order to avert embarrassment caused to clients when they deposit the Dh500 banknote," he said.

"We know this requires time to upgrade all machines as there are more than 500 ATMs in the country," the spokesperson said.

"The bank or the financial institution that deploys an ATM for the use of the public shall ensure that the ATM machine is equipped with a currency acceptor that can receive bills of various denominations," Ahmad Al Ali, an ATM technician, told Gulf News.

"Every bank has specialised mechanical technicians in charge of installing, diagnosing, and fixing ATM machines. They are also liable to repair hardware and software," Al Ali added.

"All ATMs should be upgraded from time to time to comply with the latest version required by the banking system as per the Central Bank's instructions," he said.
