Abu Dhabi: Bangladeshi expatriates in the UAE can access consular services such as passport renewal this weekend as their embassy in Abu Dhabi and the consulate in Dubai will be open on Friday and Saturday.

“Our consular divisions at the missions have been working from 7am to 7pm from Tuesday (March 20) and this will continue until Monday (March 26). We will work on Monday, although it is our national holiday to celebrate Bangladeshi National Day,” a top diplomat told Gulf News on Thursday.

The extra work is part of ‘extended consular service week’ to celebrate the National Day and the country’s latest achievements of meeting some of the criteria to elevate its status to a developing country from the least developed country (LDC), said Mohammad Imran, Bangladeshi Ambassador to the UAE.

He said it is a different kind of celebration initiated by the Bangladeshi Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “We used to declare holidays to celebrate happy occasions. Now we decided to work more on this occasion,” he said.

He urged his compatriots to utilise this opportunity to access the consular services on weekend.

The embassy and the consulate will organise flag-hoisting ceremonies on their premises on Monday morning to celebrate the National Day.
