Abu Dhabi: A charity has secured the release of 7,000 inmates from various jails in the UAE since its inception in 2009.

In a press release issued on Monday, Dr Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Board of the Faraj Fund, said that it was a significant milestone for the fund that was founded to offer support for prisoners and their families.

He said that Faraj Fund offers prisoners and their families an opportunity to begin a new life. “It humbles me to know that our efforts have helped more than 7,000 people. This achievement reflects the solidarity and social cohesion of our great nation”.

The humanitarian organisation also provides some prisoners necessary funds upon their release.

Faraj Fund’s latest venture is meant to increase the number of permitted family visits for inmates. Prisoners look to benefit from the project psychologically as interacting with loved ones encourage renewed optimism, hope and an overall better standard of life while serving their sentence.

The charity has provided relief and assistance to more than 900 families residing in the UAE. “I laud our donors’ goodwill in contributing to changing the lives of hundreds of families in the UAE. I would also like to encourage the UAE community to come together and donate, in order to support and help the needy. These families need our help and we must come together to guarantee these people a chance to start fresh.”

He also expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the Ministry of Interior and the police department for its unwavering support to the fund. He said: “The police and the Ministry of Interior have provided unparalleled care to prison inmates and have worked tirelessly to protect and safeguard their rights and dignity. This effort is aligned to the UAE’s leadership directives to uphold human rights regardless of race and colour,” he said.
