Dubai: Grocery shoppers across the UAE can get a respite from high cost of living for a month as the Ministry of Economy has just launched an initiative that seeks to cut the prices of some consumer goods by 50 per cent.
The move is in observance of the International Day of Happiness and covers more than 600 stores in the UAE.
The head of the consumer protection department of the ministry, director Hashim Al-Nuaimi, announced on Monday that between March 20 and April 20, the cost of some daily essentials will be reduced, according to a report by Arabic newspaper Al Bayan.
The reduction has been agreed with representatives of hypermarket chains and will apply to thousands of basic goods and commodities available in stores across the country, including cooperatives, LuLu and Carrefour outlets.
Some grocery operators contacted by Gulf News, however, said they are not aware of the new initiative. No spokesperson for LuLu and Carrefour could be reached for comment.
The annual International Day of Happiness falls on March 20.
