ABU DHABI: The Khalifa Bin Zayed Foundation will deliver more than 1.8 million hot Iftar meals during Ramadan as part of its Ramadan food assistance programme in the UAE.

Mohammad Haji Khoury, Director-General of the foundation, said during a press conference on Sunday, held to launch the annual humanitarian food initiative, that the programme is being implemented for the ninth year running with the support of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and the close follow up of Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Presidential Affairs, and Chairman of the foundation.

He said 187 coordinators and supervisors would be deployed across the country to ensure that Ramadan meals were prepared and packaged in compliance with the safe health requirements and food delivery systems. Some 24 female supervisors will be in touch with Emirati families contracted by the foundation to prepare these meals as part of its strategy to develop their capacities to become permanent small businesses.

Sixteen strategic partners and sponsors also spoke at the press conference about their role in and support for the humanitarian initiative.

Khoury said the foundation had contracted 122 Emirati families in Abu Dhabi, 86 in Al Ain, 56 in Western Region, 83 in Dubai, 48 in Sharjah, 58 in Ras Al Khaimah, 46 in Ajman, 65 in Fujairah and 23 in Umm Al Quwain to prepare the daily Iftar meals.
