Dubai: Dubai Police’s Cyber Investigation Department handled 1,820 cyber crimes in 2015, 239 crimes more than 2014.

Lt Col Saeed Al Hajiri, director of the Cyber Investigation Department at Dubai Police, said that most of the cases were cases of sexual or financial blackmail, as well as cheating companies and establishments.

In addition to arresting people who have blackmailed women and children, the department arrested gangs specialising in cyber theft, who work with people outside the UAE, as well as gangs that steal credit card information and other groups that specialised in bank cyber crimes.

He added that there were many instances of people spreading rumours on social media targeting the UAE, and that these rumours are false and funded by third parties outside the country. He said that they know who the funders are and are dealing with them in a professional manner in line with the country’s policies.
