Ramallah: Two children, a girl and a boy each just two-years old, have died under the wheels of their fathers’ vehicles less than 48 hours after the police urged drivers to be more careful in the presence of children.
The deaths took place in Hebron and Ramallah.
Police said a father ran over his own two-year-old daughter who was pronounced dead under the wheels of her family’s vehicle in the village of Soreef in Hebron on Tuesday night.
The body of the victim, Taymaa Ebrahim Hassan Abed, was taken to the hospital to be later handed to her family for burial.
Police said in a statement about the incident that the death of Taymaa was the second of its kind in the past couple of days. Another father in Nilin, Ramallah, had also run over his two-year-old son.
The statement said that Galeb Khalil Salama Abu Shukhaidam was also pronounced dead under the wheels of his father’s vehicle. Galeb had been standing in front of his father’s vehicle, but the father did not see him and ran over his own son, instantly killing him.
The vehicle’s registration had expired, and the car was supposed to have been disposed off.
The police statement said that Taymaa was taken to the Casualty Unit in Hebron Public Hospital where medics officially pronounced her dead on arrival.
Relatives said there had been clear contradictions about how Taymaa died. However, police investigations revealed that the father ran over his own daughter at his own home when he reversed his vehicle.
He had not seen that his daughter was playing behind the car, the police statement said.
Relatives had tried to hide the truth to spare the father the legal consequences. However, police said they confronted the family members, who admitted how the child died.
The Public Prosecution in Hebron ordered the girl’s dead body to be kept at the morgue and ordered the arrest of the father, to be held until the incident’s investigation was complete.
