Tehran: A judicial official has been quoted as saying that it is possible that Iran may commute the death sentence against a woman convicted of adultery.
The stoning sentence against Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani has drawn international condemnation and has been suspended for now.
On Sunday, the semi-official Fars news agency reported that judicial official Malek Ajdar Sharifi revealed there were "ambiguities in the evidence".
"Anything is possible," Sharifi told the news agency when asked about a possible change in Ashtiani's sentence. Sharifi is the head of justice department of East Azerbaijan, the province where Ashtiani is imprisoned.
He said Ashtiani's case took a long time to decide because "there are some ambiguities in the evidence."
