Tehran: Iran has hanged two men convicted of drug trafficking in the central city of Isfahan, the hardline Kayhan newspaper reported on Sunday.

It identified the men executed in prison as Behnam J., 22, found guilty of possessing 1.6 kilograms of heroin, and Shahram A., arrested with 166 grams of heroin.

The age of the second man was not given, and the report did not say when the executions had been carried out.

The hangings bring the total number of executions in Iran to 99 so far this year, according to an AFP count based on media reports. Last year, at least 270 people were hanged.

Iran says the death penalty is essential to maintain public security and is applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings.

Murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and adultery are all punishable by death in Iran.
