Cairo: Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak Wednesday appeared in a courtroom, more than two hours after schedule, after bad weather hampered his arrival in the Police Academy on the outskirts of Cairo where the trial is being held.

An army helicopter, carrying Mubarak from a military medical centre, was seen landing in the Police Academy at 12.20 (Cairo time) and paramedics carrying him on a stretcher. Shortly afterwards, Mubarak was carried into a waiting ambulance that drove him the courtroom amid tight security.

Mubarak, 83, has been staying under arrest at the medical centre outside the Egyptian capital since August.

Prosecutors were expected on Wednesday to resume their arguments against Mubarak, former interior Habib Al Adly, and six senior security aides. They are charged with complicity in killing more than 840 protesters during a revolt that eventually toppled Mubarak last February.

Mubarak and his two sons, Alaa and Jamal, face charges of corruption.
