Aden: Six civilians were killed and eight wounded on Monday when two rockets allegedly fired by Al Houthi rebels hit a popular market in Taiz, military and medical sources said.
Three children were among those killed in the explosions outside a post office in the Bir Bacha district of the southwestern city, they said.
Taiz, the country’s third city, is almost completely surrounded by the Iran-backed rebels and their allies, backers of former president Ali Abdullah Saleh.
For months, forces loyal to the internationally recognised government of President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi have been trying to break the rebel grip on Taiz.
They have opened a road on the western side of the city, allowing aid to be brought in, but are struggling to clear the main road linking the east of the city to the south.
Civilians are bearing the brunt of the conflict between the rebels, who control much of the north, including the capital Sana’a, and loyalist forces.
According to the United Nations, the conflict in Yemen has killed more than 6,700 people and displaced at least three million since a Saudi-led Arab coalition backing Hadi’s government launched operations in March 2015.
