Sana'a: Yemen ministry of interior said that 235 people, including 24 children, committed suicide last year in Yemen.

Last year's figures of suicides was 19.6 per cent less than 2010 in which 292 people committed suicide in different parts of the poverty-stricken country.

According to the ministry website, 36 people killed themselves in the capital, 34 people in Taez and 22 in Ibb.

Meanwhile, road accidents have killed 495 Yemenis and wounded 2,539 others, 65 per cent of them seriously, in the first quarter of 2012, the ministry of interior said.

During three months, as many as 1,639 accidents occurred, most of them caused by human errors.

A total of 153 people have died as a result of car crashes, while 138 deaths caused when vehicles ran over them.

The rest died they fell from overturning vehicles.

The ministry attributed the high traffic fatalities to speeding, indifferent drivers, bad roads and drivers' failure to follow traffic laws.
