Dubai: Light to moderate rain fell in some parts of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ruwais, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Dalma Island and some parts of the eastern emirates, with more showers expected later.

The Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) said the weather was unstable and advised people to stay away from the sea and take care if venturing out in the rain and wind. The centre also expects a dip in temperatures and conditions are set to continue until at least Wednesday.

The change in weather has been caused by a surface low pressure area coming from eastern Saudi Arabia.  The sea is stormy with around 1.8-metre to 2.7-metre high waves in the Arabian Gulf and could become even rougher, said the national weather bureau. Conditions were said to be similar in the Sea of Oman.

The NCMS said the weather was partly cloudy to cloudy in general and hazy in some areas with winds blowing at speeds of 28km/h to 40 km/h. Wind speeds may reach 65km/h in coastal areas. A fresh warning has been issued for fishermen and motorists have been urged to exercise caution.

Chill

“Yes, there was light rain early in the morning that added a chill to the already cold conditions,” said Hidayat Ullah, a Ruwais resident.  He said it was still overcast at around 10am and more rain was possible.

Anosha Vikram, a Gulf News reader from Sharjah, also reported light showers, saying the weather was beautiful but slightly cold.  “It was chilly and partly cloudy in the morning when I dropped my children off at school,” she said.

The NCMS has forecast partly cloudy to cloudy weather on Wednesday, saying conditions could become dusty in some areas. It will become cloudier, especially in coastal areas, UAE islands in the Arabian Gulf, and in the northern emirates with a chance of rain. There is a high chance of rain overnight.

Strong winds could also kick up dust and sand, affecting visibility.
