  • Cyclone Phet transformed into a tropical storm as it reached the east coast of the UAE yesterday. Kalba's coastal road was closed off as waves reaching heights of four to six feet reached the UAE coastline.

Abu Dhabi/Al Ain: The National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) warned fishermen not to go to sea on eastern coast of the UAE until late on Saturday although tropical cyclone Phet has weakened and moved away from Oman.

"It is better that  people also avoid going to the beaches on eastern coast until Sunday morning," a duty forecaster at NCMS told Gulf News on Saturday.

"This  is the situation now and fishermen have to contact NCMS before going to the sea even tomorrow [Sunday] morning; we work 24 hours and welcome enquiries from all," he said.

He clarified that the warning is not applicable to the western coast of the UAE.

Phet has moved away and weakened, reaching 120 kilometres southwest of Jiwani in Pakistan, which is about 300 kilometres away from Sur in Oman, the forecaster said. "It will be moving  further away."

Although the speed of the cyclone has gone down from 120 km/ hour to 65 km/ hour, the cyclone is still dangerous enough to blow material objects, the forecaster said.

There was light to moderate rain in Kalba, Sharjah on Friday evening. "No rain reported other parts of the country on Friday and Saturday and there is no further possibility," the forecaster said.

The centre said conditions will be clear and hot in general on Monday but clouds can appear later in the afternoon over the eastern and mountainous areas. There are, however, no chances of rain.
