Dubai: Individuals can now type, print, apply, extend and renew their residency and visit visas at the self-service kiosk installed at malls in Dubai.

The first self-service kiosk was installed on Thursday at BurJuman Centre by Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD), which will allow public to renew their residents visa, extends their visit visa, print and type the forms. They can also apply for new visas or check the status of their application by using the self-service kiosk and M-Visa reader at BurJuman Centre.

This service will be implemented soon at all other malls in Dubai. The self-service kiosk will also allow Emiratis to apply for renewal of their passports, without having to visit the DNRD offices. Access to the machine can be obtained through insertion of the e-gate or national identity cards.

Major General Mohammad Ahmad Al Merri, director General of DNRD, said the self-service kiosk is of particular use to people who work long hours. Now they do not need to take leave of absence to complete their residence/visa related paperwork requirements. They can do it at their leisure while shopping or spending time with their families at BurJuman Centre.

"These kiosks are part of a programme by DNRD to simplify the procedures and to utilise the world's most sophisticated data management technology to offer quality services. They will be strategically placed across town to offer customers in various Dubai areas the convenience of DNRD 24 hours services," he said.

The other installed service is the M-visa, which allow public in Dubai and abroad to receive instant notifications via e-mail and text messages upon issuance of their entry permits or visas of all types. When applying for their entry permits either by visiting DNRD offices or using online applications at www.dnrd.ae, customers will be requested to make the necessary payments to give them access to the M-visa facilities.

When their visa is issued, they will be notified through an email message enclosing an original e-visa document, bearing the DNRD logo and signature of the director. The PDF file will be secure to prevent any tampering with the details of the visitor.

Customers will also receive an SMS notification containing the same bar code printed on the original visa document in a 2D format, as well as key information about the visitor and the sponsor. And upon arrival at any of the entry points, the parade scanner installed at the DNRD checkpoints will read the details of the entry permit directly from the mobile device of the visitor. UAE visitors will also be able to track online their applications again and request e-mails and text messages to be resent according to their convenience.

Applicants need to show the barcode sent to his mobile phone together with his passport at the passport counter. The system can work with any type of phone or mobile personal digital assistant (PDA) device.

Upon arrival to Dubai, the barcode scanner set up at the DNRD checkpoints will read the details of the entry permit directly off the mobile devices. The barcode will be scanned by officers.

How to apply for mobile visa

1. Log in to www.eform.ae
2. In the online form for M-Visa, fill up the name, mobile number and email of sponsor
3. Type name and mobile number of visitor coming from outside UAE
4. Once approved by DNRD staff at the other end, both sponsor and visitor will receive SMS message on their mobile phones with a barcode
5. Upon arrival at any port of entry in Dubai, visitor can show parade sent to their mobile phone for scanning by a special machine.
6. A visa printout can also be requested for a Dh20 fee.

What do you think of the new service? What problems do you face when applying for a visa? What are your suggestions to improve such public services?

One more good scheme. But only time would tell of its success or failure. Hope it should not fall short of success.
