Abu Dhabi: Traffic violations caught on camera in different parts of the city were aired on television for the first time by Abu Dhabi police in a bid to increase awareness.

For a month starting Sunday night, the Abu Dhabi police will air a short TV segment showing serious traffic violations along with the fines and black points for the particular offence.

The segment will be aired on Abu Dhabi TV after the news bulletin in the evening, for the next 30 days.

"Thirty serious traffic offences have been chosen as the theme for the segments, which will be aired under the slogan - You are responsible", Lieutenant Colonel Khalid Al Shamsi of Abu Dhabi police told Gulf News on Saturday.

Jumping the red signal, driving against the traffic, tailgating along highways, driving along the hard shoulder etc are some of the offences that will highlighted, he said.

The footage will show recent traffic violations recorded by the cameras placed to monitor traffic along the streets and will end with the message - You are responsible for your safety and for the safety of others.

"The vehicles that appear in the footage have already been issued with fines", Lft. Col Al Shamsi noted.

If you do not see a patrol car around, it does not mean you could commit an offence, he warned, adding that the city’s streets are monitored round-the-clock.

The objective of the TV segment is to increase awareness on the dangers of committing traffic offences and of reckless driving, while urging drivers to abide by the rules.

Such initiatives are the result of the evolving role of the police from a body that fights crime to a body that takes proactive measures to prevent offences from happening in cooperation with the community members, Lt. Col Al Shamsi added.

The clips will also be uploaded on the website www.adpolice-news.tv

Masha Allah its a great awareness to the public conducting by the AD police. Now more people will understand about the road safety and security while driving. And also its a reminder to the people who knows the traffic rule and still violating. All the very best for the AD Police.

The move is highly appreciated. But the Goverment should publish the Number Plates of the violators in leading newspaper. They should be shamed for risking others life.

this is a good move from the traffic department to ease the reckless drivers around the emirate. There is 1 major flaw on this move though, because every reckless driving will be shown on TV other people who wants to be broadcasted on TV will do some crazy stunt driving just to be shown on TV which is other road users will be more prone into danger. I hope every reckless driver that they show here will be revoked of their driving license.

I believe it will be helpful to reduce the traffic voilations considerably. However, due consideration should be given to the fact of ongoing city infrastructure developments which frequently leads in de tour and/or diversions - another factor for drivers to get confused while on the roads as one was on he right way driving for so many time and suddenly the same route/route becomes one way next day!

I salute the Authority's for setting up this new system which will bring down the number of accidents caused by reckless drivers who dont give a damm for others driving on the road. It would be great if the authority's can also air the picture of the person driving the car so we know who these crooks are. Dubai should also start this system very soon. We often think that we are very grown up to drive a car on the road but at times that insufficient and shallow knowledge of driving often leads to fatal car crashes. To add Proper Training and Education for safe and professional driving has to be given to every one before handling vehicles in the first place and education starts right from school. Most of us these days drive very roughly with full speed lacking the knowledge of safe driving as we want to reach our destinations early. Always be aware of your mistakes, be considerate and show some respect as your not the only one who is driving on the road.

my full support to this action. i am looking forward to have the same implemented in Dubai also. rack-less drivers may be enjoying the fun of doing stunts but they don't have right to put others in danger.

Good effort by Abu Dhabi Police, however, some of the fines seem pretty low...200 dirhams for driving the wrong way???

My full appreciation to the person who brought this idea to address public safety & warn violators that they are being watched...This awareness campaign by AD police is 'at its best'.
