Dubai: Phones talk. Apparently a lot about their owners. Your device conveys to the world a fair idea of the person you might be.

Dr Raymond H. Hamden, a clinical and forensic psychologist based in the UAE, told Gulf News that there is no detailed study done yet on an individual's personality and the type of phone he or she uses.

"However, there are some factors of personalities that could relate to what the phone brands provide," he said.

If you are a person who likes to get a job done quickly and in a practical manner, it would be the qualities of a conscientious personality. They clearly exhibit goal-directed behaviour - they want to complete their objective and have it done then and there.

Perhaps a tad controlling and inflexible?

Hamden said: "They would usually find it better to do the work themselves instead of having to correct any mistakes others might make."

It apparently ties in with a little fruit brand and its range of smart phones - BlackBerry. It is marketed as a device for the serious consumer, who wants to get a job done. This does not necessarily mean pinstripe suits, leather briefcases and shiny shoes. The Blackberry user tends to be a person who likes the instrument's ability to have "communications expedited".

Then there are those who like to have a "new" look and a range of options in life. Choice is the chosen spice of their lives.

Hamden said: "The iPhone is fully loaded with interesting items and people are always after new products. This is mainly because they are after a quick fix – and this is what the iPhone provides."

The iPhone contains the largest applications library - over 180,000.

Then there are those who like to "get personal".

Phones that run on the Android operating system allows users a good level of flexibility - they can personalise the interface depending on the functionality they need or prefer.

According to the psychologist, people who are categorised as having a "creativity personality" are those who are proactive and like new experiences. Sounds like an Android user.

And then you have the Symbian operating system that is said to have the largest global smartphones market share at over 40 per cent, according to international news reports. It is considered by the techno-fans as being reasonbly conservative and 'old' in its approach. Nokia uses Symbian and traditional users of the brand might tend to stick to it - indicative of the "emotional stability and agreeability" personalities.

Hamden said: "Emotional stability personality [prefers] ... calm in the situation. [And] the "agreeability" personality focuses on trustworthiness, modesty and a prosaic attitude."
