Abu Dhabi: The Law Respect Culture Bureau (LRCB) at the General Secretariat of the Office of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has called for instilling values in children that help them show respect for law.

On the occasion of International Children’s Day, Brigadier Salah Obaid Al Goul, director of LRCB, said that the responsibility of parents is not restricted to providing for their children’s physical needs but also ensuring their mental and psychological well-being.

“The concept behind protecting children involves the parent instilling good ethics and values in their child either in a direct or an indirect manner. The rules set by parents on how a child should treat their brothers, sisters or housemaids gives them a preliminary model on respecting social laws,” Al Goul said.

“It is important to set a clear and fair ‘legal system’ for all family members in a home in which a child is rewarded for following it and disciplined, within the appropriate limits, for violating it. This eases the child’s integration into schools, then in their workplace, and appreciate law and legislations enforced by social institutions,” Al Goul added.

“Children learn not by orders but by following their parents’ example. For instance, a parent who does not wear his seatbelt when driving cannot force his child to wear it. A parent who gloats about his reckless and fast driving in the company of his children cannot expect them to grow up to be drivers who will abide by the traffic laws and not endanger the lives of other motorists.

“The law punishes parents who neglect their children. The real psychological punishment for a parent, however, is when their child becomes a murderer or violates laws, actions which can be attributed to a parent neglecting to provide psychological care for the children and instilling good ethics and values in them, he added.
