Dubai: Fancy being dunked in ice water on a humid weekend at a Dubai beach? If Hollywood and Bollywood stars can do it, so can Dubai residents.

Fifty Dubai residents have already signed up for the ice bucket challenge since the creation of a Facebook page a day earlier. The Dubai ALS Ice bucket challenge invites all interested Dubai residents to bring their own bucket to the Kites Beach at Umm Suqueim on Friday morning, and show the world how Dubai residents stand united for a challenge.

The convenor of this group on the Facebook page, Dubaialsicebucketchallenge, is Ravshan Abitov, a business consultant, who felt it was high time the Dubai community showed its big generous heart. “We are not just money makers here. We care for the world and stand united with others around the globe in this challenge to raise awareness about this condition. I have invited one and all to come armed with a bucket and use iced ocean water for the challenge. In just a day since I created the Facebook page many visited it and 50 have already signed up. I think it is important for us as a community to be in step with global trends. As for money, there are no donations asked. I have directed people to the ALS website and asked them to make their donations there,” says the enthusiastic businessman who feels as a community we can throw the challenge to any other community in any country and show our solidarity with a global cause.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body.
