Sharjah: A man whose girlfriend left him for his best friend poured petrol and set himself ablaze under her balcony early on Friday morning.
Police said the 21-year-old Egyptian, identified as M.S., suffered 95 per cent burns and was admitted to Al Kuwait hospital, where he died a few hours later.
The man went to his Palestinian girlfriend's house in Al Butaina at 4am on Friday because she dumped him for his best friend. He shouted to her, saying she should talk to him and answer his phone calls. He said he loved her and wanted her back. "M.S. [the spurned lover] was shouting under her balcony that he could not live without her," a police officer said.
M.S., who is a student, lives with his father. He told the woman that he will set himself ablaze in front of her eyes if she did not talk to him. "It seems the girl shut all her windows, turned off the lights and went to bed," the officer said.
M.S. poured petrol, threatening to kill himself but the girl ignored him. Moments later, he set fire to himself.
M.S. left behind a letter saying he loves her and would kill himself because she had left him for his friend. He said in his letter that the gifts she had given him were left in a box under his bed in his house and she can take them all.
