Indians in Abu Dhabi to host flag to celebrate Republic Day

Abu Dhabi: The Dubai Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi will hold the flag hoisting ceremony on this year’s Indian Republic Day on Thursday at Abu Dhabi Indian School.

The ceremony used to be held at the embassy premises but this year it will be at Abu Dhabi Indian School, a spokesman of the embassy told Gulf News Wednesday.

The school conducts a ceremony every year which is attended by the Indian Ambassador, so both the events will be clubbed this year, he said.

M.K Lokesh, Indian Ambassador, will hoist the national flag at 8:30 am, followed by the cultural programmes of the school pupils.

The school was proud to host the embassy’s republic day ceremony, B.R. Shetty, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Indian School, said. The ceremony will be held on the school ground which has a nice infrastructure to organise such a huge event, he said.

The Indian Consulate in Dubai will organize the Republic Day celebration at the Indian High School, Dubai , Zabeel Campus (Senior School) at 8:30 am on Thursday.

“The flag will be hoisted by the Consul General and he will read out the Indian Presidents message, followed by march past and performance by students,” Ashok Kumar, CEO of Indian High School Dubai said.

40,000 to attend

The event is expected to be attending by 40,000 people, he said, adding that food court, games and music will add colour to the event. He also urged residents to use Dubai Metro, to avoid congestion.

The entry will be from gate number 3 and parking spaces will be available outside the campus at Al Nasr Club and near St Thomas Church.

The embassy and consulate will host receptions for invited guests on Thursday evening at Hilton Hotel in Abu Dhabi and Grand Hyatt in Dubai, respectively. A Gujarati cultural troupe from India will perform at the Abu Dhabi reception on Thursday, the embassy spokesman said.

The same troupe will also put up a show at the Global Village in Dubai on Jan 27 at 7 pm, the Consulate said.

At the Indian Social and Cultural Centre (ISC) , Ramesh V Panicker, the president of the centre will hoist the national flag at 7:30 am on Thursday.

At 9pm, the ISC under the patronage of the Indian Embassy will organize a cultural programme with the participation of other registered Indian community organizations in the capital such as Indian Ladies Association, Kerala Social Centre, Abu Dhabi Malayali Samajam and Indian Islamic Centre.
