Dubai: As protests spread in the region over an American–made film deemed offensive to Islam, the UAE has called on the UN Security Council to exert all efforts to protect all religions from such acts of defamation in order to stem violent reactions and extremism in the region.
The call was made by Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, who met on Thursday with ambassadors of the five permanent members in the Security Council - the United States, Britain, China, Russia and France.
The UAE has condemned the attack on the US mission in Benghazi, which killed US ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.
“The UAE carries a message of moderation, peace and opposition to terrorism and fundamentalism in all forms,” Shaikh Abdullah said. His call came as violent protests swept the region. In Yemen protesters stormed the US embassy, resulting in the death of one protester.
Angry protests continued in Egypt and spread to Iran, Gaza Strip, Iraq, Lebanon, Tunisia, Sudan and Bangaladesh. Protests were also expected in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
