Dubai: People can now report bounced cheques through the Dubai Police app or mobile website.
The feature is now available on the app under “mobile services”.
There are two conditions to reporting a bad cheque, according to the app — the first is that it should be issued within Dubai and second, that the validity period of the cheque to be cashed has not expired.
The Dubai police app is part of the vision to transform all the services provided by Dubai Police to mobile services, which is in line with the directions of the Government of Dubai and the initiatives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to turn Dubai into a smart city.
Colonel Khalid Nasser Al Razouqi, General Director of Smart Services at Dubai Police, said the feature allows users to take a photo of the bounced cheques.
In a previous interview, Al Razouqi explained that the user only needs to take a photo and fill a quick form with some details, and the police will then issue the sender a letter, which the user can then take to the bank. The bank will then deal with the police for the rest of the procedures.
He had said if the case needs to be referred to the prosecution, that is when the user needs to go to the police, otherwise the user can do everything from their phone.
Colonel Dr Mohammad Nasir Abdul Razzaq Al Razouqi, Deputy Director of the Department of Criminal Investigation (CID) for centres and police stations, commended the new feature. He said bounced cheques are one of the most common criminal reports they file at CID, and so the service will make it much easier for the public to do so.
He said the mobile feature will make reporting bounced cheques faster and cut down the number of routine procedures, saving both time and effort.
