Abu Dhabi: Around Dh30,000 was raised in a charity fund-raising event on Thursday to aid victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines that wiped out communities in central Philippines on November 8 last year.

More than 300 people gathered on Thursday in Abu Dhabi to take part in the event that was organised by the Diplomatic Group for Spouses of Ambassadors in the UAE. The money will be forwarded to the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) to help provide support to children and for reconstruction work in the affected areas.

Typhoon Haiyan killed 5,200 people and left hundreds of thousands homeless.

“The charity event featured a broad range of items brought together by the spouses of ambassadors to the UAE, such as clothing, jewellery, accessories, home decorations, artwork, handmade souvenirs, food and delicacies, which were put either on sale or on auction.

“We try our best to give back to the community and support people who are victims of various natural disasters,” said Gul Gulluove, president of the Diplomatic Group, and wife of the Belgium ambassador.

The Diplomatic Group hosted several charity events earlier across the UAE to give a helping hand to flood victims in Thailand as well as earthquake victims in Japan. The Diplomatic Group had also organised an open charity day last year to raise money for special needs in the Future Centre.
