Dubai: Protecting the environment is going 3D as the Ministry of Environment and Water plans to create an animated movie targeting young people on reducing their use of plastic.

Based on the campaign the ministry launched last year to rid the UAE of plastic bags that are not biodegradable by 2013, a short film will be the latest weapon to spread awareness and get teens excited about their environment.

As the first of its kind, the film created by the ministry will revolve around poor practices when it comes to discarding trash.

Khalid Mohammad Saidi, director of education and awareness building, said the film will educate young people to conserve natural resources.

Ajman is the first emirate to ban the production of non-biodegradable bags, starting from today. The other emirates will all have to follow suit over the next three years.

Plastic pollution can be fatal to animals that eat plastic waste, mistaking it for food. One in two camels has been found to die from ingesting plastic waste. Rocks of calcified plastic, weighing anything from 10 to 60 kilograms, are found inside animal stomachs every day.
