Medical university hails decade of success
The Gulf Medical University (GMU), based in Ajman, celebrated its tenth anniversary on Wednesday evening with an address by the university officials and colourful performances by students and staff.
The institution, previously a college, became a university in July after an order issued by Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
Addressing a crowd of students, faculty and alumni, the Founder and President of the college Thumbay Moideen said that the university's success is due to the support of Shaikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Ruler of Ajman and Member of Supreme Council, as well as the contribution of the entire team.
"This is the only institution with its own teaching hospital in the country," said Moideen. "We struggled and overcame obstacles... We are now the institution in highest demand in the country, and we hope to be the best in region," he said. "GMC Hospital Group is the largest healthcare provider in the country and we aspire to become the best," he added.
For her part, Provost Guita Ashogrash said, "We started in a humble way with a medical college and had to struggle to provide students adequate facilities to learn and practice so that by the time they graduate, they demonstrate their skills, attitudes and knowledge as physicians as they make their entry into the profession."
Marking the occasion, the three batches of GMU graduates officially launched its alumni society.
