Dubai Women’s College (DWC) gives women the confidence they never knew they had, graduate class speaker Eman Al Tayer told Campus Notes at her graduation last week.

At two consecutive graduation ceremonies the DWC sent out just over 1,200 female higher diploma and bachelor graduates into the world to join an already existing 4,000-alumni base.

Getting out there

“The most impact the university has had on me is that it gave me the confidence I never had when I was in school and I’m grateful for such a gift I thought I never had,” said Eman, a business and management bachelor’s degree graduate.

“The projects we’ve had since year one are very challenging because we had to put ourselves out there [in the field] … which gave me the confidence school never challenged me to build,” Eman added referring to the public speaking and general work experience she underwent during her years at the DWC.

Serving as role models

Dr Howard Reed, Director of the DWC, echoed her sentiments and commended the graduates on their perseverance and ambition when he said: “As you move forward, more confident of your competency and obviously more accomplished, your performance at the work place will highlight the standards of excellence that the DWC offers its graduates.”

Taking risks

Reed went on to tell the women of their success as role models in the Emirati community and added: “I hope you will inspire others to follow in your footsteps to become Emirati leaders.”

Eman, who has already partnered with two of her fellow graduates to open a business specialised in cake making said: “The DWC taught us to do things people don’t usually do. It taught us to challenge ourselves in life as there is nothing more pleasurable than achieving something not expected.”

Eman said of her business venture that most graduates opt to go directly into the work force while others are not afraid to face the challenge of taking risks through business ventures.

To further motivate the graduates to strive for excellence, the two ceremonies had guests of honour Mirza Al Sayegh, Investment Adviser and Member of Board of Trustees at Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences, and Ahmad Humaid Al Tayer, Governor of Dubai International Financial Centre, address the students about the importance of education.
