Dubai: A policeman, who admitted before his mother in court Thursday that he possessed and consumed drugs, will spend four years in jail.

The Dubai Court of First Instance jailed the 24-year-old Emirati policeman for four years after Presiding Judge Hamad Abdul Latif Abdul Jawad found him guilty of possessing and consuming hashish.

"Who is this lady sitting in the courtroom?" the judge asked the accused, E.H., in courtroom four yesterday. "She is my mother," replied the defendant shortly after he admitted that he possessed a piece of hashish weighing 8.04 grammes and consumed the same drug.

Thereafter Presiding Judge Abdul Jawad allowed the mother to approach her son, who stood inside the dock, and speak to him.

The accused was spotted hugging and kissing his mother dearly inside the courtroom. While the elderly lady walked back to her seat, the judge addressed E.H. and exclaimed: "A son, who loves his mother, does he possess and consumes drugs!" The judge found the accused guilty and jailed him.

Prosecutors had charged E.H. of possessing 8.04 grammes of hashish. An Emirati anti-narcotics lieutenant testified that the defendant was arrested in Bur Dubai Police Station.

The primary judgment remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
